Niranjan Shah who was born on 4 June 1944, is a retired cricketer from India. Currently he is 79 years old. He played for Saurashtra in first-class cricket from 1965/66 to 1974/75. Besides his cricketing career, Shah is also a successful businessman and currently holds the position of honorary secretary at the Saurashtra Cricket Association.

Shah is the honorary secretary of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, which means he helps run the organization. He is also the chairman of the National Cricket Academy Board, where he likely makes important decisions for cricket development. Also, he is a member of the disciplinary committee of the BCCI, which probably involves ensuring fair play and addressing issues within cricket. Shah has been praised for his work in improving cricket in the Saurashtra region. Due to his efforts, a new cricket stadium in Rajkot has gained Test venue status and a new IPL team has been based in the town since December 2015.

On February 15, 2024, there was a special event at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot where it was officially renamed as the Niranjan Shah Stadium. This stadium will be hosting the upcoming third Test match between India and England, which is also scheduled to start on February 15.

During the ceremony, which took place before the third Test match between India and England, several notable individuals were present including India's head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, and players Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and Axar Patel. Also in attendance were members of the coaching staff and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar.

The event also included the felicitation of India cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara, Jadeja, and Jaydev Unadkat. Sunil Gavaskar acknowledged Niranjan Shah for his significant contribution in improving the performance of Saurashtra, who have now won the Ranji Trophy championship twice.


Since 2013, the stadium has held a total of 11 matches in different formats of international cricket. The first ever One Day International (ODI) game at this venue was played between India and England. Additionally, there have been two Test matches held here as well. Both of these Test matches were notable for high scores, with one ending in a draw between India and England, while the other resulted in a comfortable victory for the Indian team against the West Indies.
