Kangana Ranaut was born in 1987 in the little town of Bhambla (now called Surajpur), Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. She was born to a wealthy Rajput family. Her father Amardeep Ranaut is a businessman and contractor while her mother Asha Ranaut is a school teacher. She has an elder sister named Rangoli and a younger brother named Akshit Ranaut.
She initially wanted to become a doctor but changed her mind after a failed chemistry test. Her mother wanted her to get married at 16 but Kangana wanted independence so she left college and went to Delhi to pursue her career in modelling. She is 36 years old.
In Delhi, Kangana began her career as a model before transitioning to theatre with the Asmita Theatre Group under Arvind Gaur. Her performances in plays like Girish Karnad’s Taledanda received praise, motivating her to pursue acting further in Mumbai. She sharpened her skills at Asha Chandra’s drama school before making her mark in the film industry. She is 5 feet 5 inches tall.
She made debut into Bollywood with Gangster
Kangana Ranaut made her acting debut in the 2006 film “Gangster” earning praise from critics and awards. She was later named the “Pride of DAV” by her school principal Dr. Sachdeva for her achievements. The next movie Kangana was in was Mohit Suri's Woh Lamhe (2006), which was based on the relationship between Parveen Babi and Mahesh Bhatt, the director. Critics praised Ranaut for her portrayals of emotionally complex characters in movies like Fashion (2008) and Life in a Metro (2007).
Ranaut continued to showcase her talent in movies like “Raaz: The Mystery Continues” (2009), “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai” (2010), and “Tanu Weds Manu” (2011), where she portrayed the sassy character Tanu. Kangana later played a naive woman in Queen (2013), a comedy-drama that was the most successful Hindi movie with a female lead.
In Krrish 3 (2015), Kangana portrayed a mutant character alongside Hrithik Roshan. Also, in the same year, she took on a double role in the film "Tanu Weds Manu Returns". Later, she played the titular role of Lakshmibai in the movie 'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi' (2019).
In Panga (2020), Kangana took on the role of a sportswoman. It was also in 2020 when Ranaut began her journey as a director and producer with her own production company, Manikarnika Films. Her net worth is estimated to be around 80 crores. She charges around 12 crores per movie.
Her Relationships
Kangana began dating Aditya Pancholi while she was still struggling. He was married and 20 years older than her. Eventually, Kangana left him due to experiencing physical abuse. Following their breakup, she found love with Adhyayan Suman while working on a movie together in 2009, but unfortunately their romance was short-lived.
Following that, Kangana was reported to be dating Ajay Devgn while filming Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. Following that, Kangana had a brief romance with British Doctor Nicholas Lafferty. Later, she began dating Hrithik Roshan. Their romance, which became one of the most talked-about in Bollywood and ended in a court fight.
Controversy related to her
In 2012, during the Blender Pride Fashion Week in Mumbai, Kangana Ranaut experienced a wardrobe malfunction while strutting down the runway for designer Gavin Miguel.
One of the most notable controversies was her public feud with actor Hrithik Roshan, which escalated into a legal battle after she referred to him as a "silly ex."
After Sushant Singh Rajput's tragic death, Kangana Ranaut expressed her concerns about Mumbai's safety, sparking a heated exchange with Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut. The situation escalated when Anil Deshmukh suggested Kangana should not stay in Mumbai. Kangana then accused Sanjay Raut of threatening her and made a controversial comparison to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir.
After a dispute with the Maharashtra government, Kangana Ranaut received a notice of building violations from BMC officials which was placed at the gate of her office in Mumbai. Upon her return to Mumbai from Manali on 9 September 2020, the BMC began demolishing alleged illegal structures at her office while she was under tight security.
In December 2020, Kangana Ranaut engaged in a heated exchange on Twitter with Diljit Dosanjh during the farmer's protest in Delhi.
On 1 March 2021 due to a criminal complaint filed by Javed Akhtar. Mr. Akhtar accused Ms. Ranaut of making defamatory statements about him, linking him to the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput during an interview on 19 July 2020.
Twitter banned Kangana Ranaut's account on 4 May 2021 due to her controversial tweets about the violence in West Bengal, including promoting the concept of "An eye for an eye." However, on 24 January 2023, Twitter decided to lift the suspension after nearly two years.
She received numerous Awards
Kangana has won four National Film Awards for her performances in various films. She received the awards for Best Supporting Actress in Fashion (2008), Best Actress in Queen (2014), Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), Panga (2020), and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019).
Kangana has also been awarded four Filmfare Awards; Best Filmfare Debut for Gangster (2006), Best Supporting Actress for Fashion (2008), Best Actress for Queen (2014), and Best Actress- Critics for Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015).
She was given the Padma Shri (2020) by President Ram Nath Kovind at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2021.
