Chandu Champion is based on India's first Paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Petkar.


In the movie Chandu Champion, Kartik portrays the character of Murlikant Petkar. Murlikant was born on November 1, 1944 in the Peth Islampur region of Sangli, Maharashtra. Murlikant showed exceptional talent in wrestling, athletics, and hockey from a young age. His life took a tragic turn during the 1965 Indo-Pak War at Sialkot Sector where he suffered grave injuries including multiple gunshot wounds and memory loss. He made a remarkable recovery within two years.

Petkar began his career as a jawan in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers in the Indian Army. His athletic talents led him to represent the Indian Army in Boxing at the International Services Sports Meet 1964 in Tokyo. In 1968, Petkar participated in table tennis at the Summer Paralympics and won four swimming medals.

In 1972, he began working in TELCO, Pune. At present, he doing service at the post of Senior Assistant in the Public Relations Department.
