The veteran actor sincerely thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the selection committee for nominating him as a candidate for the Lok Sabha election in Meerut. The party recently announced the fifth list of 111 candidates for the upcoming election. Actress Kangana Ranaut has also been selected to run from the Mandi seat in Himachal Pradesh. Personal Life and Family
Arun Govil was born on 30th October, 1958 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. He graduated from Chaudhary Charan Singh University where he studied engineering science and also attempted in acting by performing in some plays. Upon finishing his studies, Arun moved to Mumbai to assist his brother in his business. However, his desire to carve out his own path eventually led him to pursue a career in acting. He is 66 years old.
Arun Govil's father, Chandra Prakash Govil, worked as a government waterworks engineer in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He had a total of 8 children - six sons and two daughters. One of Arun's elder brothers, Vijay Govil, married Tabassum, who was a former Indian actress and the host of Doordarshan's popular show "Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan."
Arun is happily married to Shrilekha Govil, a former designer and actress. Together they have two children, Amal and Sonika. Amal works as a banker in Mumbai, while Sonika is currently studying at the Hult International Business School in Boston, USA. He is 5 feet 10 inches tall.
He made debut in acting with film Paheli (1977)
After waiting for two years in Mumbai, Arun finally got his first break in the film Paheli (1977) where he played a supporting role. His work impressed the the film production company, Rajshri Productions who went on to sign him as a lead actor for three more movies - Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979), Raadha Aur Seeta (1979), Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin (1979).
In the early 1980, Arun Govil appeared in Judaai with Rekha and Jeetendra. He was later cast in Jiyo To Aise Jiyo opposite Debashree Roy, Ayaash, Sasural, and Brij Bhoomi in 1982. In 1983, he starred in the hit movie Himmatwala alongside Jeetendra and Sridevi, followed by roles in Justice Chaudhary as a Police Inspector and Kalka.
Later on, in 1989, Arun made his first appearance in an Odia film called Bidhira Bidhan. Following this, he starred in a Bhojpuri movie named Pyari Dulhaniya. Two years later, he entered the Telugu film industry with his debut in the movie Edu Kondalaswamy. Then, in 1992, Arun provided his voice for the character of Lord Rama in the Hindi version of Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, an animated film co-produced by India and Japan.
His role as Ram is most remembered
Arun made his television debut in Ramanand Sagar's well-received series "Vikram Aur Betaal" (1988), playing the mythical King Vikramaditya. Later, he was contacted to play Lakshman in the upcoming film Ramayan. Arun Govil did not think it was a good fit for him and turned down the offer, stating that he only wanted to portray Ram and could give the character credit in the series. Even the Ramayan's management team first rejected his proposition before eventually naming him as the lead character.
In an interview, he said, Ramanand Sagar personally informed me that I had been chosen to play the role of Lord Rama in his production of Ramayan, as the selection panel believed there was no one better suited for the part. It seemed like fate had brought me to this opportunity. Then, in 1986, he appeared as Lord Rama in Ramananda Sagar’s Ramayan along with Deepika Chikhalia (as Sita), Sunil Lahri (as Laksman), Dara Singh (as Hanuman), and Arvind Trivedi (as Ravana).
In 2008, I established my own production company called "Arun Govil Productions Private Limited." Then in 2024, I took on the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the film 'Article 370.'
He made his way into Politics in 2021
Mr. Govil joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 18 March 2021, just before assembly elections in several states and a Union territory. He mentioned that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's reaction to the phrase "Jai Shri Ram" was a key reason for his decision to join the BJP. According to him, saying "Jai Shri Ram" is not just a slogan but a way of life that represents Indian culture and values. His current net worth is estimated to be around 35 crores. In June 2022, he purchased a Mercedes C 200.
